Samen met andere onderzoekers van het Onderzoekscentrum voor Jeugd, Kerk en Cultuur (OJKC) ben ik betrokken bij de International Association for the Study of Youth Ministry (IASYM). Zo was collega Ronelle Sonnenberg een aantal jaren lid van de Executive Committee van IASYM. Voor mij geldt dat ik voorzitter mag zijn van de academic committee die de Europese IASYM conferentie volgend jaar in Tsjechië voorbereidt. Vanaf 2014 begin ik tevens als hoofdredacteur van de Journal of Youth and Theology. De uitdaging is van dit journal een internationaal hoogwaardig wetenschappelijk tijdschrift te maken.

Een grote varieteit aan onderwerpen houdt het internationale gezelschap van onderzoekers en practitioners in het veld van Youth Ministry bezig. Dat blijkt elk jaar weer op onze congressen en ook in de artikelen die in de Journal of Youth and Theology verschijnen. Voor de conferentie in 2014 hebben we een thema gekozen dat de schijnwerpers in het bijzonder zet op de rol van embodiment in relatie tot oude en nieuwe media: ”embodiment in youth ministry – in digitalized and other ways”. De Journal of Youth and Theology zal in 2014 ook een nummer uitbrengen waarin bijdragen over dit thema zijn opgenomen. More and more, the concept of embodiment or embodied faith is emerging in debates found in youth ministry research. A plea for a bodily or physical approach in youth ministry, in a way, contrasts with the more and more digitalized world and life of young people. Although the internet and new (social) media can enhance multisensory experiences, we need to recognize that the digital world by definition lacks the physical closeness of people in it. At the same time, though, it could still be asked how powerful ´old media´ and forms of aesthetics are in embodying faith? What does this mean for the development of youth ministry, the work of youth ministers and research into the field of youth ministry? The IASYM 2014 European conference is aiming at reflecting the importance of the body, embodiment and multisensory experiences of faith for the field of youth ministry.
